South Winneshiek Baseball Goes 1-1

New Hampton hosted South Winneshiek May 21.

“A playoff type atmosphere between the Chickasaws and Warriors in the season opener resulted in an extra inning thriller with the Chickasaws taking the win on a bases loaded single by Mason Cleveland in the eighth inning,” said South Winneshiek coach Alex Smith by email May 22. “Jackson Lukes provided the offensive damage for the Warriors connecting a two run homer in his first at bat of the season in the top of the first. This would prove to be the only runs of the game for the Warriors with Levi Lukes adding the only other hit later in the game. Hunter Todd threw three scoreless innings in the start with Austin Tieskoetter and Mason Elsbernd also throwing in the game. We knew going in, we would be challenged against a quality team with solid pitching. Strikeouts offensively was the biggest area of concern in this game, while I was pleased with our pitching and defense keeping us in a tight game. We had lots of positives to take away, knowing New Hampton has gotten us pretty good over the past couple of years.”

Sun and warmth greeted May 23’s contest with South Winneshiek defeating Waukon.
