About Us

Based in Calmar, Iowa, the Calmar Courier is the official Paper of Calmar, Fort Atkinson, Spillville, Ridgeway, Waucoma, and Turkey Valley Community Schools as well as an official paper for Winneshiek County.

Communities served include: Calmar, Castalia, Eldora, Festina, Fort Atkinson, Jackson Junction, Lawler, Ossian, Protivin, St. Lucas, Spillville, Rideway, and Waucoma as well as the South Winneshiek and Turkey Valley school districts and Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC).

Located amidst the bluffs of northeastern Iowa, the city and the newspaper alike trace their name to the Kalmar Sound on the southeastern coast of Sweden. The region draws upon a heritage of Scandinavian, German and Czech settlers. Owing first to the influence of the railroad, and later to the confluence of major highways in the area, the area is a hub for travel.

In recent years, the Calmar Courier has joined the family of roughly 30 different publications printed by Mid-America Publishing Corporation based in Hampton.

The Calmar Courier is joined by sister MAP newspapers with the Postville Herald and the Outlook in Monona, offering advertising potential to our customers as well as the possibility of expanded news coverage.

Mid-America Publishing Corporation started in 1962. Today, Mid America publishes 22 weekly newspapers, 7 shopper publications and three specialty publications. It has operations in 16 Iowa counties.
