Fayette Man Sentenced on Federal Firearms Charge

A man from Waterloo who was living in Wadena, Iowa, when deputies discovered his involvement in multiple firearms violations was sentenced on July 23, 2024, to more than 4 years in federal prison.

David Jerald Samuell Chiles, age 34, from Waterloo, Iowa, received the prison term after a January 25, 2024, guilty plea to one count of possession of a firearm as a felon, one count of possession of a firearm as a felon and unlawful drug user, and one count of making a false statement to purchase a firearm.

Evidence at the guilty plea and sentencing hearings, established that on May 9, 2022, Chiles was involved in a Waterloo, Iowa, shooting that resulted in two people being wounded.  On August 5, 2022, Chiles made false statements about his status as a convicted felon to purchase a shotgun from a Waterloo, Iowa, gun dealer.  On October 2, 2023, Fayette County deputies went to Chiles’s residence in Wadena, Iowa, to arrest him for an unrelated incident and found him to be in possession of drugs and another firearm.  A search warrant was executed and methamphetamine and marijuana and an assault rifle were found and seized in the Wadena residence.

Chiles was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams.  Chiles was sentenced to 57 months’ imprisonment and must also serve a 3-year term of supervised release after the prison term.  There is no parole in the federal system.

Chiles is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Patrick J. Reinert and investigated by Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
