Foland Continues Tradition

Editor’s Note: The Calmar Courier is profiling members of the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office who have served in the military.

Deputy Mike Foland is the son of a veteran.

“My father served in the Military and I wanted to serve as well,” said Foland by email.

The Independence native has eight years in the United States Navy in his background. He served in Desert Shield and Desert Storm as well as during the Persian Gulf War with Operation Provide Comfort. Foland also has two Mediterranean cruises to his name.

“One of my best and lasting memories is being out to sea in the middle of the night and standing on the weather decks,” said Foland. “The skies were so clear and it was so peaceful.”
