Hageman Wins $50K

With students gathered in the gymnasium Thursday, school board president Wendy Mihm-Herold asked for assistance in congratulating one of South Winneshiek’s own. A short time later, South Winneshiek agriculture instructor Melissa Hageman arrived.

A standing ovation greeted Hageman after winning $50,000 with the 2018 Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence.

Hageman was one of 15 second-place winners. Fellow Iowan William Dunham, an industrial technology instructor at Wapello, also took second place.

“What I love most about what I teach is that every day and course is different,” Hageman wrote in her prize application, as provided by Harbor Freight Thursday.
