Klimesh Motor Sales: serving the Calmar area for over a century

In 1908, Robert A. Klimesh began a business that would withstand over 100 years.  Upon reaching this milestone, it’s important to recognize how they got here and what the future holds for Klimesh Motor Sales.

It all began in what is now the Old World Inn, in Spillville. The lower floor housed the office and parts department while the family lived upstairs. This is where Emil was born. The family later purchased a home from John Hospodarsky, which Robert expanded upon and modernized.

Klimesh’s began selling the 1908 High-wheeled International auto. During this time, the City Council passed an ordinance that allowed automobiles on the streets, replacing hitching posts. This was only as long as cars did no more than 6 mph! In 1911, Klimesh Motor Sales were selling: Ford, Buick, Reo, Flanders 20, RCH 24, Crowe, and Overland automobiles. Back then, cars did not come fully assembled and ready for sale; rather, they were shipped in boxes by rail. The business was flourishing.

Because of their success, the family was one of the first in Spillville to have electric lights, powered by a gasoline generator in 1913. Robert then instituted a similar, larger, version of the generator for the whole town’s use after the council’s approval.
