New Qualifying System Will Change Football

A pair of long playoff qualifying streaks will be on the line in Class A, District 4 this year under a new qualifying system that rewards success throughout the season.

Saint Ansgar graduated a pair of 1,000-yard rushers from a team that reached the playoffs for the 12th year in a row last season while South Winneshiek graduated a 1,400-yard rusher and 1,200-yard passer from a team that reached the postseason for the seventh year in a row. The Saints return five starters on offense and six on defense while South Winn. returns just three starters on offense and must replace its entire offensive line. Newcomers will need to get comfortable quickly this year as, for the first time, non-district games will be part of the formula that determines at-large playoff qualifiers.

More set for a fast start could be a Newman Catholic team that returns 17 starters, including its top three runners, from a team that went 5-4 last year. Central Springs and Postville return 11 starters each from teams that had less success a year ago while Nashua-Plainfield returns just seven starters and almost no skill players, and Starmont returns only 13 players total.
