CALMAR - South Winneshiek saw a busy week that ended with the girls winning the Decorah Tourney 6-0.

Hosting North Fayette Valley, South Winneshiek girls fought for control of the Upper Iowa Conference title to get the week going.

“Tonight we took NFV on at home in what was very likely a conference deciding match,” said Coach Ethan Adams. “While things didn’t go our way, I was proud of the way we battled down the stretch. There weren’t many points in the match where I felt like things were completely out of reach. Our response was strong in many moments, and we had key players in supporting roles step up to give us big boosts. Aubrey Hageman with a 4 Ace second set to give us life in a set that was slipping away, Addi Timp having another great showing from opposite with 6 six kills, both in support of a great night by senior Ivey Franzen with 7 kills jump to mind. There are many things we learned as a coaching staff about where to go from here. We credit Coach Cowley and NFV for a fun match, and credit the fact that they played outstanding defense and were a hard team to score on. Regardless, we will find the next goal and work to get better from here. I’m proud of how we responded as a team, I don’t know if we’d have rallied to win set three a couple weeks ago. They’re growing and fighting as a group of young women, and that makes our staff immensely proud. This is a good group of girls.”

Up Thursday was a battle with Postville with the Lady Warriors going 3-0.

South Winneshiek made short work of the Lady Pirates, 25-6, 25-15 and 25-13.

“I thought we got better in the first set last night,” said Adams. “We were translating some things we’d done recently in practice to gamelike scenarios. Hopefully we can translate our play efficiency from matches where we’re favored to matches that are more of a toss up. We were able to exhaust our whole roster and have some great plays from non-starters down the stretch. Ellie Knutson made a couple really nice digs late in the match, and Briana Boyer and Kiara Bullerman had a block late in the third set to effectively help put the match on ice. We have a solid tournament at Decorah this weekend that we’ll need to get prepared for today so we can continue to make ourselves more and more competitive as we wrap up our conference season over the next couple of weeks, and look toward regional play.”

The Lady Warriors hit the Decorah Tourney Saturday, going 6-0 with wins 2-0 over Kingsland, 2-1 over MFL MarMac, 2-1 over Decorah, 2-0 over Riceville, 2-0 against Decorah again and then 2-0 over Jesup.
