JACKSON JUNCTION - The driver of a tractor in an accident with a train Monday has been identified.

Carl Adolf Kuhn, 60, of Fort Atkinson, was attempting to cross the railroad tracks on 128th Street near Highway 24 at 2:32 p.m. and failed to see a train until it was too late, according to a report from the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a statement from the conductor made to law enforcement, the train was slowing but still going at 30 mph at the time of impact.

Kuhn was ejected through the windshield of the tractor.

Lifesaving measures at the scene were not successful, and Kuhn passed away.

The train engine is listed as taking $500,000 in damage and being operated by Union Pacific Railroad, according to the accident report.

The crash took place at an uncontrolled railroad crossing with yield signs but not lights or gates.
