South Winn Students Lead ‘March for Life’

A couple South Winneshiek students were successful in translating the national March for Life to a more local setting as a crowd of roughly 70 people rallied around Pro-Life speakers and took to the streets to march on the Winneshiek Courthouse.

On the national level, the March for Life takes place usually in January and typically draws crowds of hundreds of thousands.

Amid the upheaval of the last year, the normal routine was disrupted, but a pair of students carried through an idea to have a local version.

TV Performing ‘Black Hearts and Bearded Ladies’

A comedy in three acts introduces the audience to Minnie and Rupert Floss, a slightly odd couple who own and manage the Sweetwater Inn.

The Sweetwater has fallen from grace over the years and now a group of armed robbers, the so-called, "Bearded Lady Bandits," threaten the neighborhood.

Performances will take place May 7-8 at 7p.m.

SW Musical Takes Whimsical Approach

A look back at 2020 is in store for the 2021 South Winneshiek musical.

Performances of “2021: The Year in Revue” are set for Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.

“We chose to do a revue, which is a selection of songs from various shows that are often set to a theme,” said Ethan Adams, who with Meghan Herold co-directs the musical.  “The theme for our show, the year 2020.”

Genesis of the idea came about with a tumultuous year.

Hometown Heroes: Protivin Firefighters Honored

A really big accomplishment has been achieved by one area fire department.

The Iowa Firefighters Association has selected the Protivin Volunteer Fire Department for the receipt of the Outstanding Department Award for 2021.

Members accepted the award Saturday.

Chief Brad Moudry confirmed receipt of the award Sunday morning.

It is quite an achievement.

Over 800 departments in the state are represented by the group, and the selection is made based on nominations, said Martin Ahrndt, secretary with the Protivin department.

SW Celebrates ‘A Night At The Circus’

The Grand March returned to South Winneshiek as students took part in prom once again.

With prom canceled in 2020, the 2021 prom was the first time in two years students and the community had a chance to check out the finery of prom night.

The gymnasium was packed to not far from capacity with heavy community turnout.

A circus them was present for this year’s iteration.

After the Grand March in the gym, students ventured over to PIVO for the dance itself.

Festina Hosts Dairy Princess Crowning

The 2021 Winneshiek County Dairy Banquet went off without a hitch with awards and the crowning of a new princess.

Emily Carolan, 17, of Decorah, was named the 2021 Winneshiek County Dairy Princess with Ashley Elsbernd, 16, of Calmar, being named this year’s alternate.

Repeating as Little Miss Squirt is Kalyse Waterman, 10, of Ridgeway.

Roughly 100 people attended this year’s event, the 58th iteration of the organization’s annual gathering, at the Festina Community Community Center with a meal provided by U2 BBQ & Catering, of Calmar.

Nashua Hosts Weekend Competition

Turkey Valley claimed the number two squad overall and the second-highest girl as the Trojans and Warriors competed over the weekend in trap shooting.

Led by Lane Arens with a 46, Turkey Valley Red had 214, aided by Brody Hackman, Brady Barta, Jackson Vsetecka and Marcus Kriener for second place overall for the day amid some chilly conditions.

It was a big field of competition at Saturday’s invitational with Lake Mills, Osage, Northwood-Kensett, Charles City, South Winneshiek and Turkey Valley all traveling over to Nashua for the day.

Supervisors: Resignation Could Mean Appointment Or Calling Special Election

A resignation announcement by the chairman of the Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors has county officials eyeing just how to fill a vacancy that will mean 80 percent turnover for the county’s highest elected body.

With three new faces already since Jan. 1, Chairman Floyd Ashbacher’s resignation, due to a move out of his district, will mean Supervisor John Beard will be the only member of the board serving longer than the start of the current year.

City, Parish Reach Compromise

A popular recreation spot in St. Lucas that has been maintained by parish funds but used by the general public cannot continue under the previous status quo, St. Lucas city officials heard with council agreeing to take on some responsibility.

A special meeting of the St. Lucas City Council saw council members talk budget matters as well as discuss procedure for using an online platform for meetings in addition to discussing just what to do about the ballfield area adjacent to St Luke Catholic Church.

Drugs Found Near Schools, Charges Filed

Serving a search warrant Thursday, the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home in Ossian in close proximity to one elementary school and within walking distance of another school where deputies found two pounds of methamphetamine and issued charges against one man.

With a street value of nearly $25,000, the drugs were found at 306 E. Main St. during the search, which began at 2 p.m. while classes were in session at both St. Teresa of Calcutta a few doors down and South Winneshiek a few blocks away.

Three separate felony charges have been filed as a result.
