Warriors Make History

A crazy night was in store for South Winneshiek Saturday.

After pulling off a District Final win earlier in the week, the Warriors traveled down to Manchester to play at West Delaware against Gladbrook-Reinbeck.

Who would walk off with the win was anybody’s guess, especially depending on just what quarter you were watching.

South Winneshiek seemed destined for an easy win, up 20-11 at the end of the first quarter and up by as many as 13 points during the first half.

Warriors Secure OT Victory

An early lead against Clayton Ridge in the District Quarter Final turned into a tough battle for South Winneshiek before a win 64-56.

Up 16-4 after the first quarter, the Warriors saw the lead eroded to 28-25 going into the half.

The Eagles stayed in the game, with South Winneshiek maintaining a slight lead, 40-36, to end the third quarter before Clayton Ridge forced the overtime.

Jacob Herold led with 31 points while Trey Kriener managed 16 points and Cael Kuboushek had eight points for the night.

Warriors Make Commitments

Three graduating South Winneshiek football players will reunite this fall.

Jacob Herold, Dominic Sisneros and Cael Kuboushek have made voluntary commitments to Iowa Central Community College.

The three young men will play together at the school, based in Fort Dodge.

A confluence of Warrior talent has the boys eager.

“Looking forward to playing with some of the guys I’ve [competed] with,” said Cael Kuboushek, the son of Jeff and Charity Kuboushek.

Jacob Herold said he was “excited” about the prospects.

He is the son of Alvin and Wendy Herold.

Lady Trojans Win Again With Lady Warriors

South Winneshiek hosted Turkey Valley with the Lady Trojans walking away with the victory, 48-12.

Turkey Valley took an early lead, ending the first quarter 18-1.

Warriors Finish Second With Conference Tournament

The final action ahead of conference wrestling for South Winneshiek saw the Warriors split a win and a loss while the conference tournament itself had South Winneshiek earning second place.

Journeying over to North Butler, South Winneshiek took a narrow loss, 42-39, against Central Springs while besting North-Butler Clarksville 42-31.

That brought things up to Upper Iowa Conference Tournament time.

With an expected drubbing aiming right for us Saturday, officials made the decision to move the action to Friday.

Girls Wrestling Draws Area Competitors

South Winneshiek and New Hampton/Turkey Valley were both represented as state girls wrestling got underway.

With girls wrestling continuing to gain steam, the 2021 IWCOA Girls State tournament started Friday and wrapped Saturday in Coralville.

For NH/TV, Tierney Perkins, wrestling at 138, is boasting an 18-7 record, the best for girls with her program while Bailey Cox (15-10), wrestling at 132, was the top placer, earning fifth place for the day.

Claire Quirk, wrestling at 145, was the top scorer for the day with 17 points.

Warriors Sink Pirates

A 62-32 victory left Postville dead in the water to get South Winneshiek started for the week.

"We were very aggressive defensively and offensively from the tip, and we played very hard and well for all [four] quarters,” said Coach Blake Moen. “I give our guys great credit for coming into this game with a great mindset to get an early lead and continue to build on it."

The Warriors were up 16-6 after the first quarter and led 29-13 at the half.

Warrior Wrestling Returns

Riceville hosted Upper Iowa Conference duals Thursday with South Winneshiek wracking up some wins.

With the Warriors’ return to action for the second part of the season, South Winneshiek faced a variety of foes.

Wins included 72-6 over Clayton Ridge, 42-34 over North Fayette Valley, 45-36 over Postville and Riceville 54-24.

In addition to the regular action, against Central, South Winneshiek’s Kaydn Meyer lost by fall to Maria Medberry (Central), and Rebecca Suhr (Central) was bested by Carly Meyer by fall at 4:00 in extra competition.

Hoffert, Herold Show UIC Scoring Strength

Fans missing their dose of sports will be in luck as area athletes return to the court.

With the first part of the winter season under their belts, athletes for South Winneshiek and Turkey Valley will get a chance to see a return to action.

Right now, the Lady Trojans are emerging near the top of the pack for girls’ basketball in one key area to follow.

Turkey Valley girls are proving offensively strong, a review of Upper Iowa Conference statistics shows.
